Mummy MOT® Postnatal Check with Concetta
“ A Mummy MOT is a 1-Hour specialist postnatal examination for women following both vaginal and C-section deliveries. It has been designed to assess post-partum conditions and how your posture, pelvic floor muscles, respiration and stomach muscles are recovering after birth."
Who can benefit from a Mummy MOT?
The postnatal assessment is suitable for all mums from six weeks and beyond. However, it's never too late to make an appointment if you are experiencing symptoms.
How can a Mummy MOT help?
Research suggests that up to 40% of women can still have diastasis (tummy separation) six months after giving birth. One third of first-time mums will experience urinary leakage post birth, and over 50% of women will lose some of their pelvic floor support following a vaginal delivery.
With a Mummy MOT examination I will be able to give you a bespoke exercise programme to help you rehabilitate those muscles. Evidence shows that pelvic floor rehabilitation can improve pelvic organ prolapse, urinary incontinence and sexual dysfunction. In the past it was thought that “pelvic floor weakness” was the culprit of all evils and that the more pelvic floor exercises the better. However, it is not often the case. Sometimes your pelvic floor is overactive. Sometimes you have been told to engage it in a way that creates more harm than good. Sometimes all it takes is to learn how to breath properly.
The advice you receive is tailored to you and your specific needs because there is not one recipe for all. Our bodies are all different and we all require different inputs. This postnatal recovery plan is designed to get you back to your personal lifestyle and fitness goals.
What happens during a Mummy MOT?
The MOT starts with some talking and listening to any post partum problems or issues, if there are any, as well as some questions.
The assessment will include an internal pelvic examination to assess your pelvic floor muscles. For this you will be required to remove the bottom half of your clothing, including underwear. You will be asked to sign a consent form before this exam takes place. The internal screening is not compulsory, however it is advisable to gain a clearer picture of what’s going on. You’ll then get dressed again and the I will assess your posture, your breathing pattern, your tummy gap and c-section scar.
The full assessment will help me putting together an exercise programme for you to do at home, along with other advice. You will receive an email with the results of your assessment so that you won’t feel overwhelmed by the information I will provide you with.
